The 2009–10 season was Gateshead’s first season in the Conference National since the 1997–98 season and their twelfth at this level in total.Gateshead initially avoided relegation on goal difference after finishing the season in 20th position but this was increased to two points when 12th placed Salisbury City were relegated to the Southern League Premier Division.
