The 2008–09 season was Gateshead’s first season in the Conference North and their first at this level since the introduction of the Conference North & South in 2004.Gateshead qualified for the Conference North Playoffs after finishing the season in second place five points behind league winners Tamworth. Gateshead were promoted to the Conference National on 8 May 2009 after beating Telford United 1–0 in the playoff final.
