The Tuscarora (hemp gatherers) are a Native American people of the Iroquoian-language family with members in New York Canada and North Carolina. They coalesced as a people around the Great Lakes[citation needed] likely about the same time as the rise of the five nations of the historic Iroquois tribes based in present-day New York.Well before the arrival of Europeans in North America the Tuscarora had migrated south and settled in the region now known as Eastern Carolina.
