Surinamese people in the Netherlands are people in the Netherlands which come from a Surinamese background. Until 1975 Suriname belonged to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Many links still exist between both countries.Approximately 350000 individuals of Surinamese descent live in the Netherlands having variably arrived following Suriname’s independence in 1975 after the military coup of 1980 or after the December murders of 1982.
