Placenta is a dish from ancient Rome consisting of dough topped with cheese and honey and flavored with bay leaves. Cato included a recipe in his De Agri Cultura. Its origin is the traditional Ancient Greek thin flat bread or cake plakous (Greek: πλακοῦς). The Roman dish survived into the modern era as the Romanian plăcintă cake.
