On either side of the laryngeal orifice is a recess termed the piriform sinus (also piriform recess pyriform sinus piriform fossa or smuggler’s fossa) which is bounded medially by the aryepiglottic fold laterally by the thyroid cartilage and thyrohyoid membrane.
