In enzymology a benzoin aldolase (EC 4.1.2.38) is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction2-hydroxy-12-diphenylethanone 2 benzaldehydeHence this enzyme has one substrate 2-hydroxy-12-diphenylethanone and one product benzaldehyde.This enzyme belongs to the family of lyases specifically the aldehyde-lyases which cleave carbon-carbon bonds. The systematic name of this enzyme class is 2-hydroxy-12-diphenylethanone benzaldehyde-lyase (benzaldehyde-forming).
