In 2002 Ronaldo signed for Real Madrid leaving Inter Milan after five seasons and a UEFA Cup: to replace him Massimo Moratti took Hernán Crespo from Lazio. Other signings were Fabio Cannavaro and Matias Almeyda both from Parma. 2002-03 season saw Internazionale take a respectable second place in domestic league behind Juventus: with 24 goals in 23 times Christian Vieri was the topscorer.
