Zidovudine (INN) or azidothymidine (AZT) (also called ZDV) is a nucleoside analog reverse-transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) a type of antiretroviral drug used for the treatment of HIV/AIDS infection. AZT inhibits the enzyme (reverse transcriptase) that HIV uses to synthesize DNA thus preventing viral DNA from forming. AZT is the first U.S. government-approved treatment for HIV marketed under the brand name Retrovir.
