The University of Utah Utes football team was started in 1892 and played three games that year. Although Utah did not field a team in 1893 it resumed played in 1894—once again playing three games. A different person acted as coach each year on a volunteer basis. However the coach of the 1892 season is unknown. The first known head coach was Robert Harkness who coached the 1894 season. He was followed by Walter Shoup in 1895 C.B. Ferris in 1896 Mr.
