Uroporphyrinogen III is the first cyclic metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of heme. The linear precursor hydroxymethylbilane is generated from four porphobilinogen (PBG) molecules by the third enzyme in the synthesis hydroxymethylbilane synthase (or porphobilinogen deaminase).
