The 1986 United States Senate election in North Carolina was held on November 8 1986 as part of the nation-wide elections to the Senate. Incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Jim Broyhill who had been appointed in June 1986 to serve out the rest of John Porter East’s term and popular Democrat Terry Sanford won both the special election in June and the regular general election in November.
