Elections to the United States House of Representatives for the 27th Congress were held on different dates in each state from July 6 1840 (Louisiana) to November 2 1841 (Mississippi) and gave the Whig Party control of the House of Representatives for the first time. The Panic of 1837 had created an economic depression and the perceived mishandling of this crisis by President Martin Van Buren gave the Whigs the presidency (William Henry Harrison was elected) and a majority in the House.
