The elm cultivar Ulmus ‘Nigrescens’ was identified by Pynaert [1] as Ulmus campestris betulaefolia nigrescens. Considered by Green to be probably Ulmus carpinifolia (: minor) but said to have been raised from seed of Purpurea.
