Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole or co-trimoxazole (BAN; abbreviated SXT TMP-SMX TMP-SMZ or TMP-sulfa) is an antibiotic used in the treatment of a variety of bacterial fungal and protozoal infections. It consists of 1 part trimethoprim to 5 parts sulfamethoxazole. The drug has been marketed worldwide as generic preparations and under multiple brand names including Septra (GSK) and Bactrim (Roche).
