The Martyr is a poem by Herman Melville written about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1866 one year after the event. Melville praises Lincoln in Christ-like terms calling him the Forgiver but predicts that his assassination will cause the forgiver to be replaced by the avenger.The poem appeared in Battle Pieces and Aspects of the War (1866)
