The 1978 Texas gubernatorial election was held on November 7 1978 to select the governor of the state of Texas. Former Deputy Secretary of Defense Bill Clements was elected over the Democratic candidate state Attorney General John Luke Hill who many experts had predicted to win the governorship. The election marked the first time that Texas elected a Republican governor since Reconstruction in 100 years.
