Spectrin alpha chain brain is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SPTAN1 gene. The spectrins are a family of widely distributed cytoskeletal proteins which are involved in actin crosslinking. The protein enocoded by this gene is a spectrin alpha-chain which heterodimerizes with tissue-specific beta-chains. It is specifically expressed in nonerythrocytic cells. The encoded protein has been implicated in other cellular functions including DNA repair and cell cycle regulation.
