General elections were held in Spain on 28 October 1982. The Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party emerged as the largest party winning 202 of the 350 seats in the Congress of Deputies and 157 of the 227 seats in the Senate. The previous governing party the Union of the Democratic Centre was decimated falling from 168 seats to 11—one of the worst defeats ever suffered by a western European governing party. It was replaced as the main non-socialist party by the People’s Alliance.
