The Shawnee or Shawnee nation (Shaawanwaki Ša˙wano˙ki and Shaawanowi lenaweeki) are an Algonquian-speaking people native to North America. In colonial times they were a semi-migratory Native American nation at times inhabiting areas spanning present-day Ohio Virginia West Virginia Western Maryland South Carolina Kentucky Illinois Indiana and Pennsylvania in the United States. They were removed to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River in the 1830s.
