Schnitz un knepp often spelled schnitz un gnepp is a staple[citation needed] in the cuisine of the Pennsylvania Dutch. It translates roughly to (apple) slices and dumplings. The name is derived partially from descriptive terms: something that is ‘snitzed’ (in the Pennsylvania German language from the standard German ‘schnitzen’) is sliced such as the thinly sliced apples in this dish (compare to ‘Wiener Schnitzel’ veal cutlets).
