San Antonio de la Eminencia castle is a colonial castle built in the seventeenth century by the Spanish monarchy in Cumaná Venezuela to protect the city from the constant raids by English French and Spanish pirates. Originally called Careacus its construction began c. 1659. The fort has undergone several renovations due to damages caused by violent earthquakes that have shaken the city in the last centuries.
