The Diocese of Erfurt is a diocese of the Catholic church in Germany. The diocese was erected in 1973 as the apostolic administration of Erfurt-Meiningen and was elevated in 1994 to the current diocese of Erfurt. The diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Paderborn. The Diocese currently is a vacant see (sede vacante) with Pope Benedict XVI’s acceptance of Bishop Joachim Wanke’s resignation on Monday October 1 2012. Bishop Wanke had served as Bishop of Erfurt since 17 January 1981.
