The Richmond and Danville Railroad Company was chartered in Virginia on March 9 1847. The construction of the line of railroad between Richmond and Danville Virginia was completed in 1856. The railroad was complete only between those locations only 144.7 miles (232.9 km) distance during the American Civil War but it played a vital role in linking Richmond to the rest of the Confederacy.
