In enzymology a protocatechuate decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.63) is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction34-dihydroxybenzoate catechol + CO2Hence this enzyme has one substrate 34-dihydroxybenzoate and two products catechol and CO2.This enzyme belongs to the family of lyases specifically the carboxy-lyases which cleave carbon-carbon bonds. The systematic name of this enzyme class is 34-dihydroxybenzoate carboxy-lyase (catechol-forming).
