Prelabor rupture of membranes (PROM) or premature rupture of membranes is a condition that occurs in pregnancy and is defined as rupture of the membrane of the amniotic sac and chorion more than one hour before the onset of labor which in turn is defined by the ACOG as uterine contractions of sufficient frequency and intensity to result in progressive effacement and dilation of the cervix. PROM is considered prolonged when it occurs more than 18 or 24 hours before labor.
