Phronima is a small deep sea hyperiid amphipod of the family Phronimidae. It is found throughout the world’s oceans except in polar regions. Phronima lives in the Pelagic zone of the deep ocean. The body of Phronima is semi-transparent. Although it is commonly known to be a parasite a more technically correct term would be parasitoid. Instead of constantly feeding off of a live host females attack salps using their mouth and claws to eat the animal and hollow out its gelatinous shell.
