The perichondrium (from Greek περί (peri ‘around’) and χόνδρος (chondros ‘cartilage’)) is a layer of dense irregular connective tissue that surrounds the cartilage of developing bone. The chondrogenic layer remains undifferentiated and can form chondroblasts or chondrocytes.
