The 2005 Palestinian presidential election — the first to be held since 1996 — took place on 9 January 2005 in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Voters elected PLO chairman Mahmoud Abbas to a four-year term as the new President of the Palestinian Authority to replace Yasser Arafat who died on 11 November 2004. No Palestinian presidential elections have taken place since 2005 and Abbas has continued in office since the expiration of the term.Seven candidates contested the election.
