The NZR WW class was the final development of the six coupled tank engine in New Zealand. The only tank engines built after these were the WAB class which were tank versions of a mainline Pacific type. The lineage of the WW can be traced back to the first locomotive built wholly in New Zealand the NZR W class. They were the first tank engines built with superheaters. A handful of this versatile class remained in service until the end of steam operations.
