Nifurtimox is a 5-nitrofuran and is used to treat diseases caused by trypanosomes including Chagas disease and sleeping sickness. It is given by mouth and not by injection.It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines a list of the most important medication needed in a basic health system.
