In enzymology a N-acetyllactosaminide alpha-23-sialyltransferase (EC 2.4.99.6) is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reactionCMP-N-acetylneuraminate + beta-D-galactosyl-14-N-acetyl-D-glucosaminyl-glycoprotein CMP + alpha-N-acetylneuraminyl-23-beta-D-galactosyl-14-N-acetyl-D- glucosaminyl-glycoproteinThus the two substrates of this enzyme are CMP-N-acetylneuraminate and beta-D-galactosyl-14-N-acetyl-D-glucosaminyl-glycoprotein whereas its 3 products are CMP alpha-N-acetylneuraminyl-23-beta-D-galactosyl-14-N-acetyl-D- and glucosaminyl-glycoprotein.This enzyme belongs to the family of transferases specifically those glycosyltransferases that do not transfer hexosyl or pentosyl groups.
