Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) analog that is used to prevent gastric ulcers to treat missed miscarriage to induce labor and to induce abortion. Misoprostol was invented and marketed by G.D. Searle & Company (now Pfizer) under the trade name Cytotec but other brand-names and generic formulations are available.It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines a list of the most important medication needed in a basic health system.
