Mark of Ephesus was born and baptized Emmanuel Eugenikos. Following his monastic profession he took the name Mark around the year 1422 (Greek: Μάρκος Ευγενικός). He was a 15th-century Archbishop of Ephesus is famous for his defense of Eastern Orthodoxy at the Council of Florence (1438–1445) in spite of Byzantine Emperor John VIII Palaeologus and Pope Eugene IV.
