James Render Dowdell (April 2 1847 – June 21 1921) was an American jurist and the 20th Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court from 1909 to 1914.Dowdell was born in Chambers County Alabama the son of Congressman James Ferguson Dowdell. He attended grammar school in LaFayette Alabama and secondary school in Auburn before attending the University of Alabama for two years. He then attended East Alabama Male College graduating in 1867.
