Irish Americans (Irish: Gael-Mheiriceánaigh) are Americans who can trace their ancestry to Ireland. About 56.7 million Americans—11.9% of the total population—reported Irish ancestry in the 2008 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. About 5.4 million people (1.8% of the population) identify more specifically as Scotch-Irish whose ancestors were Ulster Scots who emigrated from Ireland to the United States.
