Iodine is very important for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland in the neck secretes a hormone called thyroxine of which iodine is an important element. Lack of iodine stunts growth and causes the thyroid gland to become irregular – this disorder is called goitre. People with goitre are advised to use iodised salt. Iodine is an essential trace element; the thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine contain iodine.
