India held general elections to the 4th Lok Sabha in 1967. This was the fourth election since independence in August 1947. The 27 Indian states and union territories were represented by 520 constituencies each with a single seat.The Indian National Congress remained in power by winning a clear majority of seats but the party now held 70 less seats than in 1962. This stood in contrast to the previous three elections in which they had won landslide victories.
