The Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album has been awarded since 1959. The award was given only to the album producer and to the composer and lyricist who wrote at least 51% of the music which had not been recorded previously. From 2012 the award description is as follows: Award to the principle vocalist(s) and the album producer(s) of 51% or more playing time of the album.
