In enzymology a galacturan 14-alpha-galacturonidase (EC 3.2.1.67) is an enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction(14-alpha-D-galacturonide)n + H2O (14-alpha-D-galacturonide)n-1 + D-galacturonateThus the two substrates of this enzyme are (14-alpha-D-galacturonide)n and H2O whereas its two products are (14-alpha-D-galacturonide)n-1 and D-galacturonate.This enzyme belongs to the family of hydrolases specifically those glycosidases that hydrolyse O- and S-glycosyl compounds.
