The Edward MacDowell Medal is a prize awarded annually by the MacDowell Colony of Peterborough New Hampshire United States to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the arts. It was established in 1960 and has been given to writers composers and visual artists. Recipients have included Joan Didion Lillian Hellman Georgia O’Keeffe I. M. Pei Norman Mailer John Updike Mary McCarthy Merce Cunningham and Sonny Rollins.
