Edward Gierek (Polish pronunciation: [ˈɛdvart ˈɡʲɛrɛk]; January 6 1913 – July 29 2001) was a Polish Communist politician. Gierek replaced Władysław Gomułka as First Secretary of the ruling Polish United Workers’ Party in the People’s Republic of Poland. He was removed from power after the labor strikes leading to Gdańsk Agreement signed with the unionized workers followed by the imposition of martial law in Poland by a military junta.
