Eclampsia (from the Greek ἐκλάμπειν to shine forth here in the sense of sudden occurrence) is an acute and life-threatening complication of pregnancy characterized by the appearance of tonic–clonic seizures (convulsions) usually in a woman who has developed pre-eclampsia.
