Dominican immigration to Puerto Rico has risen sharply in recent decades with tens of thousands of arrivals since 1961 but people have moved from the territory of the Dominican Republic to its eastern neighbor Puerto Rico and vice versa since the European colonization of the Americas. Immigrants have come from the various segments of Dominican society with quite varying levels of contribution at different times.
