Whiteley was born in Essex and started his career working for the commercial radio station Essex FM in 1995 as a broadcast journalist. During this time he was a finalist in the New York radio festival. In 1998 he moved to BBC Essex in Chelmsford where he read the breakfast news bulletins and was a reporter.
