The Dakota people are an indigenous people of the Great Plains of Canada and the United States. They are one of the three main subcultures of the Sioux /ˈsuː/ people and are usually divided into the Eastern Dakota and the Western Dakota.The Eastern Dakota are the Santee (Isáŋyathi or Isáŋathi; Knife) who reside in the extreme east of the Dakotas Minnesota and northern Iowa.
