Cystathionine is an intermediate in the synthesis of cysteine.It is generated from homocysteine and serine by cystathionine beta synthase.It is cleaved into cysteine and α-ketobutyrate by cystathionine gamma-lyase.An excess in the urine is called cystathioninuria.
