In the Austrian-Hungarian Empire between 1897 and 1911 a collection of standards and product descriptions for a wide variety of foods was developed as the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus. The decision to establish it was made in Vienna in October 1891.Mainly the outcome of a voluntary effort on the part of experts in the food industry and universities the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus was not strictly speaking a collection of legally enforceable food standards.
