Clomipramine (trademarked as Anafranil) is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). It was developed in the early 1960s by the Swiss drug manufacturer Geigy (now known as Novartis) and has been in clinical use worldwide ever since. It is the 3-chlorinated derivative of the earlier tricyclic imipramine.It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines a list of the most important medication needed in a basic health system.
