The term chromophobe refers to histological structures which do not stain readily and thus appear more relatively pale under the microscope—hence their fear (phobia) of color (chrome).Chromophobe cells also known as amphophils are epithelial cells found in the anterior and intermediate lobes of the pituitary. They are one of three cell types the others being basophils and acidophils.
